Manimajra, Chandigarh

Manimajra is one of Chandigarh’s most historically significant localities, an older, pre-existing town absorbed into the city rather than built from scratch as part of Le Corbusier’s numbered sector grid. It gives a unique and different character with ancient street layouts, a dense market-heavy layout, and a strong sense of local identity. Located on the eastern side of the city, it acts as a crucial connecting link between central Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Zirakpur, having transformed from a historic village into a lively, well-developed urban hub. The area offers every facility within easy reach, a very low crime rate, well-maintained public infrastructure including parks and public bathrooms, good public transport, and a green, well-mannered community. A longtime resident has pointed out that while Manimajra was renamed as “Sector 13” (the number being deliberately left out from naming sectors in Chandigarh), this particular myth should still be verified through reliable sources before being announced as fact.
